F1 sprint RESULTS: George Russell wins with Max Verstappen outside top-3 at Brazilian GP

Please refresh the page or navigate to another page on the site to be automatically logged in Please refresh your browser to be logged in Follow Brazilian Grand Prix updates as George Russell leads following a collision between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton George Russell brilliantly fought his way past Max Verstappen to take the first win of his Formula One career in Saturday’s sprint race to claim pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix later today. Russell hounded Verstappen for a number of thrilling laps at Interlagos before making his move stick between Turns 3 and 4 to triumph for Mercedes – he will start first for Sunday’s race, with Lewis Hamilton alongside him after Carlos Sainz’s five-place grid penalty. The 24-year-old British driver kept his composure to take the chequered flag 3.9 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Lewis Hamilton passing Verstappen on lap 20 to take third. Pole-sitter Kevin Magnussen took the chequered flag in eighth. Magnussen sprung the shock of the season when he claimed the first pole of his career in Friday night’s rain-affected qualifying. But the 30-year-old Dane’s dreams of following up his maiden pole with his first win were over on the start of lap three when Verstappen cruised past him on the run down to Turn 1. Lewis Hamilton now within DRS range of Sergio Perez – he’s right on the tail of the Red Bull! Perez covers the inside down into turn four… and holds off for now! George Russell, meanwhile, very happy about this battle for second – he’s 10 seconds clear! Carlos Sainz now sets the fastest lap on a new set of mediums! Could the Spaniard come into play too – on a different strategy to the top-three? Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc has ascended up to ninth – behind Lando Norris – while Max Verstappen is in 11th place, behind Mick Schumacher. Much cooler now around Interlagos, which looks to be favouring the Mercedes cars. Hamilton closing in on Perez – now just 2.5 seconds behind the Red Bull. Carlos Sainz pits – he takes his second stop and comes out only in fourth, just in front of Valtteri Bottas in fifth! Lewis Hamilton up to third now – and has set the fastest lap! He’s rapid on those fresh tyres! Only four seconds off Sergio Perez, who is told he’s going to “Plan B.” Also, whisper it quietly: it’s looking quite misty over Interlagos now! Could the weather play a part too?! Lewis Hamilton pits! It’s a 3.9 second stop – and he’s onto mediums! Could he get to the end of the race without stopping again? The Mercedes man comes out in fourth, 15 seconds behind Carlos Sainz – who pitted 13 laps earlier! Sebastian Vettel now pits – and comes out behind Pierre Gasly and Valtteri Bottas… all the way down in ninth place! Meanwhile, both Verstappen and Norris serve their penalties – they are now 17th and 12th respectively! Very damanging for the McLaren then. Perez pits, with a rapid two-second stop, and Russell responds – and no undercut! Russell stays ahead, while Perez has to get past Bottas and is now behind Vettel in third! Lewis Hamilton now leads the Brazilian Grand Prix – what is his plan going to be?! He is yet to pit… Charles Leclerc pits again… from 16th! He’s now down to 17th – only Nicholas Latifi behind him! The Ferrari has a new set of soft tyres. Dreamworld for Sergio Perez in his battle for second in the Championship. Speaking of which, the Mexican is struggling to keep on the tail of George Russell; the gap is now 3.4 seconds. Hamilton is now just six seconds behind the Red Bull. Meanwhile, the Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel is up to an impressive fourth! The Ferrari comes in to switch to softs and comes back out in 12th! Behind Alex Albon’s Williams! Meanwhile, Verstappen is up to 15th yet Leclerc is still in 17th, with only Zhou Guanyu behind him. Lewis Hamilton surges past Sebastian Vettel this time down into turn one – and is up to fifth! And then he overtakes Lando Norris a lap later at the same corner – up to fourth! Sainz next, three seconds up the road. Don’t count Lewis Hamilton out of this yet – Russell is only nine seconds ahead too! Meanwhile, Verstappen’s reaction to the time penalty: “Where did they expect me go! But OK doesn’t matter!” Wow. Max Verstappen has a 5-SECOND time penalty for causing a collision with Lewis Hamilton! Oh the Dutchman – already down in 17th – will not like that!
