Carvan-e-Adab weaves sentiments, humour

The over 90-year-old poet, a veteran of many compositions and songs for Hindi films too, Neeraj kept the crowds together till the end, as they waited patiently to hear him. Not willing to sit on the special chair put up for him, he joined the others on the stage and presented a graceful sight, sitting, reclining and enjoying the proceedings of the evening. Beginning with a couplet, that praised poets, ‘Atma ke saudarya ka shabd roop hai kavya, manav hona bhagya kavi hona saubhagya’. Dwelling on the universal truth that death is, he encouraged people, through his poetry, to live life to the fullest as it may not last. Taking the stage first was the city’s own young poet Samir Kabir, whose father Shahid Kabir’s poetry has got the city counted in the world of Urdu literature. Reading out lines that served the cause of Urdu, Kabir read, “Din bhar suraj aag ugalta rehta hai, jaane mujhme kya tadapta rehta hai.’ He was followed by journalist and poet Alok Shrivastav. The reflections of his profession could be seen in his writing as he said, “Ganeemat hai nagarwalon looteron se lutey ho tum, humey toh gaon main aksar daroga loot jaata hai.” Taking cue from Khusro’s immortal Zihale maskin … he read a nazm, ‘sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhoo’ which spoke of love in current times. Farhad Shezad, a US-based poet opened his presentation with, ‘Watan zameen hi rehti, main sarhadon main bat gaya hoon’. Continuing with the thread of communalism, he too spoke of religious divide. The scholarly Sheen Kaaf Nizam’s poetry had the subtleness of emotion and depth as he read the lines, “Pyar chand sa hota hai, agar badh na paye toh dheere dheere ghatne lagta hai’. Confining himself to the sentiments of harmony and brotherhood, Jalapuri spoke of simple childhood memories. It was Sunil Kumar Tang from Sivana, Bihar, who evoked laughter with his delightful humour and his take on politicians, lovers and sycophants. Keeping the audience engaged, Nida Fazli evoked Kabir, Khusro and Ghalib and touched hearts with his simple lines, ‘Seedha sadha dakiya … ek hi thele main bhare annsoo aur muskan’ and the pain caused by terrorism, ‘Delhi se Lahore tak kadwe saare neem.’ Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
