Teen learner driver allegedly nabbed clocking 173km/h ‘more worried about brother’s car impounded’

A learner driver has been clocked doing a staggering speed but appeared more concerned about having his brother’s car impounded than being busted, police say. The 17-year-old had three passengers in his sibling’s Mazda 3 when he was allegedly caught driving at 173km/h in an 80km/h zone on Westall Road, Springvale about 1.15am on Sunday. Dandenong Highway Patrol cops who pulled over the youngster “were left shaking their heads”, Victoria Police say. The teen is expected to be charged on summons with driving in a manner dangerous and other driving-related offences. Police say he “wasn’t so much concerned with being pulled over … but what his brother would think when he gets home without his car”. Victoria Police are targeting impaired driving, speed, distraction and fatigue in high-risk areas throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria until Boxing Day.
