North Kipling students take humour from playground to stage through Happiness@School Project

Sixteen budding comedians from North Kipling Junior Middle School made their on-stage debuts at a special Stand-Up Showcase event this week. The Grade 7 participants who took to the stage during the Monday, Dec. 7 showcase spent three months preparing for the gig by participating in The Happiness@School Project – a “joyful learning experience” that was first launched at North Kipling JMS in 2013. The one-of-a-kind program, which was created by author Sue Stephenson, promotes mental health and well-being literacy through “positive psychology, happiness, laughter, humour – and stand-up comedy.” The Happiness@School Project saw Stephenson, along with professional comedians Kyle Woolven and Marc Hallworth, run a series of workshops with North Kipling JMS students in the Grade 7 classrooms of teachers Doug Cornell, Shannon Patterson and John Morrone. Three months of “playful work” and coaching later, the 16 participating students performed the stand-up acts they wrote themselves at Monday’s Stand-Up Showcase. “This is not a contest and is intended to feature a variety of diverse student personalities,” Stephenson explained in a press release. “To laugh at comedy on TV or in movies is one thing, but to write and perform stand-up comedy about yourself in front of others is a totally unique experience.” The project, she further explained, encourages the following skills that aren’t traditionally taught, but have “serious curriculum connections”: * the development of comic writing and performance skills working with professional comedians * the learning to lighten up with laughter exercises, mindful meditation and breathing techniques Scarborough residents has trusted the dental professionals at Sterlingdental since 1981, and when… Learning to swim from an early age will help your child become comfortable with water, and Variety… Toronto Trial Lawyers provide expert counsel and representation to people involved in legal… Your business may benefit from the services of a Chartered Professional Accountant like Rajasri… Menu Palace is the Greater Toronto Area’s leading restaurant guide for Italian eateries serving… Save even MORE after 7pm!
