Will smith- Chris rock slap gate at Oscars has once again brought limelight on the issue whether there is any limit for humour. Of late, in India also there has been many instances wherein comedians have received strong response for a joke which did not go well with many people. 2. Ideally, an act of humour must be accepted as appropriate in a given situational context.  If it is not so then response can be as strong as that of Will Smith or even more. In order to understand its nuances, one needs to first go through the theories of humour and its recent evolution. In this context, it would also be important to understand the various levels of humour. 3. The two major branches of study of humour are incongruity theories and Superiority theories. Incongruity theories of humour claim that humour is based on cognitive discrepancies. Broadly it concerns something which is unexpected, out of context, inappropriate, unreasonable, illogical and so forth. As an example, a child laughs if someone falls down. Even if it appears inappropriate it generates humour for the child. Various cartoons like micky-mouse, Masha and the Bear, Duck Tales are examples of such humour. 4. Under superiority theories, humour is the manifestation of a loss of self-restraint triggered by somebody else’s flaws and inabilities. The basic claim of superiority theories is that events that are perceived as funny usually involve another subject at whom the humour is targeted. A classic example of the same is Kapil Sharma Show where some jokes are cracked on subjects like someone’s lips, looks and other flaws. Depending upon the circumstances, it can take form of Sarcasm, satire, parody, teasing, disparagement, ridicule, mockery etc. involving bitter remarks, jibes, taunts which are offensive to the butt of the jokes but generates humour for the target audience. 5. In the last 60-70 years, television and other similar platforms gave impetus to the humour based on superiority theories. The television shows allowed content creators to identify their target audience and then accordingly choose butts of the jokes. To start with some chose politicians, some chose celebrities and some even chose race as butts of the jokes. With the advent of social media; now, the people have started picking far more different topics and subjects to find humour. People have chosen their spouses, In-laws, aunts, caste, city and what not as butts of their jokes; but most of it is based on superiority theories of humour. Even memes and roasts would fall under these categories. 6. Having seen the major theories behind humour to understand as to what creates humour, we now need to see different levels of humour found in the people. Perhaps one can understand humour more easily if the six levels in which Sense of humour is displayed are explained. 7. The above-mentioned levels of humour help us to understand that not everyone would have the same appetite for humour and there are people who might find humour in everything they see around. A person at fifth or sixth level of humour is likely to see humour even in hospital, mortuary or at similar places where people are found in misery and despair. 8. Having seen the theories of humour and levels of humour, we can now revert to our core issues on the limits of humour. The types and evolution of different kinds of humour reveals that the new technologies have led to development of new kinds of humour and subject matter of humour can be different for people of different age groups, cultural backgrounds etc. Many from older generation may not appreciate the newer varieties of the humour and may find it below standard. Some may even find it morally inappropriate which may lead to an outburst like that of Will smith. An example can be showing of middle finger. It is only recently that in some of the movies it has been shown as an act of humour. A person from an older generation who was always taught it to be an inappropriate act, may not find it humorous at all. Therefore, we all need to judge an act of humour from perspective of both – creator of humour and the receiver of humour and in this the levels of humour can come to our rescue. Act on the act: SC must rule on Gyanvapi on basis of 1991 law and put an end to any more litigation of this nature BJP’s hands off grievance politics: Is Gyanvapi about a current political project or about correcting wrongs of mainstream history? Can courts help? For J&K peace: Targeted killings can only be countered through full resumption of political process.
